Checking the technical condition of the timing belt drive

Remove the top cover.

Check the timing belt (A) for damage, as well as oil or coolant ingress.

If oil or coolant has leaked onto the belt, it must be replaced.

Remove any oil from the belt surface if it has gotten onto the belt.

Timing belt drive parts: 1 - crankshaft pulley; 2 - lower timing belt cover; 3 - engine mount bracket; 4 - Upper timing belt cover; 5 - Timing belt; 6 - Alternator and vacuum pump assembly; 7 - Power steering pump pulley; 8 - Air conditioning compressor; 9 - Camshaft drive gear; 10 - Timing belt idler pulley; 11 - Drive belt tensioner; 12 - Idle pulley

Check the camshaft gear.

Check the camshaft gear, crankshaft, tensioner pulley, roller for wear and damage. Replace parts if necessary.

Check the tensioner pulley and roller for noise by turning them smoothly. Replace parts as needed.

If the pulley has dirt stains from the bearing, replace the pulley.

Removing the drive

Remove the front right wheel of the car.

Remove the side cover.

Replacing the timing belt of the D4EA diesel

Lift the belt tensioner up to remove the accessory drive belt (A).

D4EA Diesel Timing Belt Replacement

Unscrew the mounting bolts and nuts and remove the engine mount bracket (A).

D4EA Diesel Timing Belt Replacement

Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the upper timing belt cover (A).

Replacing the timing belt of the D4EA diesel

Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the crankshaft pulley (A).

Replacing the timing belt of the D4EA diesel

Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the lower timing belt cover (A).

Removing the tensioner will reduce performance.

Replacing the timing belt of the D4EA diesel

Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the engine support bracket (A).

Replacing the timing belt of the D4EA diesel

Align the timing marks (A, B) on the camshaft gear (C) and crankshaft gear (D) with the marks (E, F) on the cylinder head (G) and on the oil pump housing (H), turning the crankshaft.

Replacing the timing belt of the D4EA diesel

Install the finger (A) into the aligned holes in the belt tensioner housing (B).

Replacing the timing belt of the D4EA diesel

Using a socket wrench (5 mm) (A), loosen the lock bolt (B). Then, turn the tensioner (C) clockwise until it stops together with the main bolt (D) and 12 mm open-end wrench (E), tighten the lock bolt (B).

Remove the timing belt.

If the belt is to be reused, it must be marked with a direction of rotation before removal.

Installing the drive

Replacing the timing belt of the D4EA diesel engine

Align the timing marks (A) on the camshaft gear (B) with the mark (C) on the cylinder head (D).

Replacing the timing belt of the D4EA diesel engine

Align the timing marks (A) on the crankshaft gear (B) with the pin (C) installed in the oil pump housing (D).

Replacing the timing belt of the D4EA diesel

Install the timing belt.

Installation must be performed in the following sequence: crankshaft gear (B) ► water pump pulley (C) ► intermediate pulley (D) ► camshaft gear (E) ► timing belt tensioner (F).

D4EA Diesel Timing Belt Replacement

Turn the automatic tensioner (C) counterclockwise until it stops.

D4EA Diesel Timing Belt Replacement

Turn the crankshaft manually one full revolution (by clockwise) to set the piston of the first cylinder to TDC

Using a special key, tighten the lock bolt. Tightening torque 10-12 Nm.

Remove the lock pin and tensioner (A).

Install the lower engine support bracket. Tighten the mounting bolts with a tightening torque of 43 - 55 Nm.

Replacing the timing belt of the D4EA diesel

Install the upper (A) and lower covers (B) of the drive belt Timing belt.

Tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 7.8 - 11.8 Nm.

Replacing the timing belt of the D4EA diesel

To install the belt (A), you need to lift the tensioner up.

Install the crankshaft pulley. Tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 30 - 34 Nm.

Install the engine mount bracket.

Install the accessory drive belt as follows: alternator ► power steering ► roller ► compressor ► crankshaft pulley ► tensioner.

Install the side cover.

Install the right front wheel.
