The outer tip of the steering rod is replaced if play of the ball joint of the rod is detected or the ball joint cover is damaged
Usually, this defect is detected with a large free play of the steering wheel and a characteristic knock.
You can check the play by shaking the wheel with both hands in a horizontal plane, before that you need to raise the car on a jack or lift.
To replace the tie rod end, remove the wheel from the side of the tie rod end to be replaced and fix the car on a stand.
Turn the steering wheel all the way in the direction opposite to the tip to be removed.
Using a 21 wrench, loosen the locknut, holding the tip with a 19 wrench by the flats
We clean the Torx key hole at the end of the finger with a metal brush from dirt.
Holding the finger with a Torx T-30 key, with a 16 key, unscrew the nut that secures the tip hinge pin to the steering knuckle arm.
Using a puller, press the hinge pin out of the lever hole.
If there is no puller, we do not completely unscrew the finger nut.
Insert a mounting spatula between the tie rod end and the steering knuckle arm
Pressing the tie rod end down with a mounting blade, and striking with a hammer at the end of the steering knuckle lever, we press the finger out of the hole in the lever
Fully unscrewing the pin fastening nut, remove the ball joint pin from the hole in the lever.
Before unscrewing the tip with a marker, mark its position relative to the steering rod or, when unscrewing, count the number of revolutions by which the tip was wrapped.
This will approximately maintain the previous wheel alignment.
Use a 19 key to unscrew the tip, holding the steering rod from turning by the hexagon with a 13 key
Remove the tie rod end.
Install the tie rod end in reverse order.
We screw it onto the threaded end of the steering rod for the same number of turns (or until the marked mark) on which it was screwed before removal.
We tighten the locknut of the tip and the nut of the ball joint pin with the moments:
- - nut for fastening the ball pin of the tie rod end 37 Nm;
- - Tie rod end lock nut 50 Nm.
After completing the installation of the tie rod end, it is necessary to check and, if necessary, adjust the toe-in of the wheels on a special stand - at a service station.
To adjust the wheel toe-in, it is necessary to loosen the lock nut of the tip and rotate the steering rod by the hex wrench 1З, holding the tip with the wrench 19.
After adjusting the toe, tighten the handpiece locknut to 50 Nm.
Replacing the steering cover
If the steering gear cover has deteriorated, it must be replaced.
Remove the wheel from the side of the boot to be replaced
Remove the tie rod end as described above
We bite with wire cutters or side cutters the plastic clamp for securing the protective cover on the steering gear housing
Remove the protective cover of the steering mechanism
We clean the steering rod joint from dirt and install a new cover in the reverse order.
We fix the case with a new clamp.
Replacing the tie rod
We install the car on a lift or a viewing ditch
Remove the tie rod end as described above
Using a 32 wrench, we unscrew the tie rod joint housing from the rack, holding the rack by the first tooth with a 22 wrench
Remove the tie rod
Install the new tie rod in the reverse order.
Before installation, apply a small amount of fixing sealant to the threaded part of the tie rod ball joint.
Check and, if necessary, adjust the toe angle.
