Place the vehicle on a two-post lift.
Removing the starter motor
Disconnect the cables from the battery terminals, starting with the negative terminal.

Disconnect:
- the oil level sensor wiring connector;
- the starter motor wiring connectors.

Unscrew the starter motor retaining bolts and remove the starter motor (Fig. 6).

Installation

Check that the locating bush is present (Fig. 7).
Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
Connect the cables to the battery terminals, starting with the positive terminal.
Tighten to the specified torque:
- the starter motor retaining bolts (38 N·m);
- the battery cover retaining bolts (4 N·m).
Removing the starter motor from the F4R engine
Removal
To remove the starter motor, the engine must be removed.
Remove the catalytic converter.
Unscrew the heat shield retaining bolts and remove it.

Remove the lower catalytic converter brace.
Disconnect the starter motor power cables.

Unscrew the retaining bolts and remove the starter motor (Fig. 9).
Installation

Check that the locating bush is present.
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
Tighten to the specified torque:
- the starter motor retaining bolts (38 N·m);
- the lower catalytic converter brace retaining nut (21 N·m);
- the heat shield retaining bolts (8.5 N·m).
Connect the cables to the battery terminals, starting with the positive terminal.
