When replacing the brake drum, you need to consider:

  • - the brake drums must be the same diameter on both sides;
  • - when grinding one of the drums, you need to grind the other drum;
  • - when replacing the brake drum, you need to replace the brake drum on the other side;
  • - when replacing the brake drum, you need to replace the brake pads.

Removing the brake drum of a front-wheel drive car

We install the car on a lift or raise the rear of the car with a jack, while fixing the front wheels.

We check that the car is securely fixed on the supports.

Release the parking brake

Remove the rear wheels

Disconnect the secondary parking brake cables to release the lever

Unlocking the brake drum

Remove the plug from the brake shield

Insert a screwdriver (1) into the hole from the inside of the car, as shown in the figure

Move the activation lever back, using a screwdriver to unlock the brake drum

Using a 36 head, unscrew the wheel hub nut

On a car with all-wheel drive, unscrew the two TorxT-40 screws securing the brake drum to the hub

In order to remove the drum, the pads must be brought together

To do this, use a screwdriver through the threaded hole in the hub to rotate the ratchet nut of the mechanism for automatic adjustment of the gap between the pads and the drum, reducing the length of the spacer bar

Rotate the ratchet nut on the left and right wheels by the teeth from the bottom up

After removing the brake drum, do not press the brake pedal, the pistons of the working cylinder can come out completely

The inner diameter of the new brake drum is 228.5 mm

The maximum permissible wear of the brake drum is 229.5 mm

The brake drum nuts must be replaced

Replace defective parts

Clean the brake drum shoes, brake drum and hub axle

When assembling, do not apply grease to the drum, hub axle, nut, or rear brake drum plug
