If you detect signs of oil leaking through the crankshaft seals, first check to see if the crankcase ventilation system is clogged or if any hoses are pinched. Repair if necessary.

If the oil leak does not stop, replace the seals.

A sign that the front crankshaft seal needs to be replaced is oil leaking past its edge.

Oil is splashed by the rotating crankshaft pulley, causing the entire front of the engine and the timing belt to become oily.

Clutch discs may be oiled by a leaking transmission input shaft seal or rear crankshaft seal.

Engine and transmission oils have different odors, so with some practice, you can determine which seal is faulty by smell. defective.

There is another way to determine the type of oil. Place a thin layer of oil in a container of water (a puddle will do).

The transmission oil will spread across the entire surface of the water as a rainbow film, while the engine oil will remain as a drop, similar to a lentil seed.

To replace the front crankshaft oil seal, do the following.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Remove the timing belt (see "Replacing the timing belt and engine pulley on a Renault Logan").

You can use a socket of the appropriate size from the tool kit or an old oil seal as a drift.

Reinstall all removed timing mechanism components in the reverse order of removal.

Pre-tighten the accessory drive pulley mounting bolt torque of 20 Nm (2.0 kgf/cm) and then turn it further by an angle of 68°± 69°.

Adjust the tension of the timing belt and accessory drive belt.

To replace the rear crankshaft oil seal, perform the following operations.

  • Remove the gearbox.
  • Remove the clutch.
  • Remove the flywheel.

Inspect the oil seal. If it has lost its seal, oil will be visible at the bottom.

Be sure to replace the flywheel mounting bolts with new ones. They cannot be reused.

When installing the flywheel, lubricate the threaded portion of the bolts with a flywheel lubricant Thread lock with Loctite Frenetanch or similar.
