Some vehicle models use a mechanical clutch actuator.

The sealed release bearing is controlled by a clutch release fork and a cable directly connected to the clutch pedal.

As the driven and pressure plates wear, and the cable itself stretches, the clutch release actuator needs to be adjusted.

The cable also needs to be adjusted when replacing the cable or all clutch components.

Adjusting the Renault Megane Clutch Actuator

Fig. Clutch adjustment: 1 - adjusting nut, 2 - lock nut, 3 - cable sheath stop, 4 - clutch release fork.

Adjust the clutch cable travel using the nut on the end on the gearbox side (Fig. 1).

Loosen the lock nut.

Adjust the clutch cable travel by loosening or tightening the nut.

Tighten the lock nut to the specified torque (8 Nm).

fig. 2. Clutch Release Fork Travel

Using a caliper, measure the distance between the cable housing stop and the end of the clutch release fork (see Fig. 2):

  • – with the clutch pedal in the initial position;
  • – with the clutch pedal fully depressed.

The clutch release fork travel should be: (x) = 29.5 mm ±0.5 mm (Fig. 2).

Replacing the Clutch Cable

Adjusting the Renault Megane Clutch Drive

For ease of subsequent installation, measure the length of the free portion of the lower end of the cable (near the gearbox) before removing the cable.

Adjusting the Renault Megane Clutch Drive

Moving the cable forward, remove it from the slot in the clutch release fork.

Remove the cable sheath damper from the bracket on the gearbox housing.

Renault Megane Clutch Adjustment

In the cabin, under the dashboard, disconnect the cable end from the clutch pedal section.

Remove the cable housing from the stop in the dash panel and remove the cable, pulling it out of the dash panel into the engine compartment.

Renault Megane Clutch Adjustment

After installing the new cable, perform the initial cable adjustment.

Measure the dimensions L and L1, respectively, between the end of the damper and the release fork, and between the end of the damper and the cable end.

Dimension L should be (86 ± 5) mm, dimension L1 – (60 ± 5) mm.

If the dimensions do not match, adjust the adjusting nut on the cable end with the lock nut loosened.
