Disassembling the DPO (AL4) Automatic Transmission Input Shaft

We discussed disassembling the DPO (AL4) automatic transmission in the article "Disassembling the Automatic Transmission."

Install the input shaft in a press and use a tool to press the piston to release the retaining ring (Fig. 1).

Remove the piston retainer retaining ring, remove the tool, and take out the retainer itself (Fig. 2).

Removing the piston retainer and retaining ring

Remove the return spring and piston.

Then, after pressing again with a hydraulic press, remove the E2 clutch housing retaining ring, and remove the clutch and the first and reverse clutch disc pack (Fig. 3).

Re-compress with tool 1 and remove the E1 clutch pack retaining ring (Fig. 4).

Remove the piston itself.

When repairing an automatic transmission, the clutch pack (Fig. 5), pistons with retainers, and sealing rings are replaced on the shaft.

Replacing the clutch disc pack

Using a puller, press out the input shaft bushing (Fig. 6).
