We remove and replace the elements of the rear suspension when faults are detected

Removal of the shock absorber

We remove the shock absorber in the event of loss of its working properties, destruction or severe wear of the silent block of the lower mounting, failure of the rubber cushions of the upper mounting, the casing or the compression stroke buffer of the shock absorber.

We carry out the work on an inspection pit or a ramp.

So that the working characteristics of the left and right shock absorbers do not differ, both shock absorbers must be replaced.

In order not to damage the hoses of the brake mechanisms of the rear wheels, do not remove two shock absorbers simultaneously with the rear part of the vehicle jacked up.

We open the tailgate door and remove the blind.

With a Torx T-20 key we unscrew the screw of the rear securing of the right shelf of the luggage compartment

Having overcome the resistance of the retainers, we shift the shelf towards the middle of the vehicle

We bring the seat belt of the rear seat passenger out through the slot in the shelf and remove it

Through the window in the side trim of the luggage compartment, with a 16 mm spanner, we unscrew the nut of the upper securing of the shock absorber, holding the shock absorber rod from turning with a special 6 mm key (one can use a key for the upper securing of the front shock absorbers of VAZ-2101 vehicles)

We remove the support washer and the upper rubber cushion of the rod securing

From under the vehicle, with a ring spanner or a 21 mm socket, we unscrew the bolt of the lower securing of the shock absorber to the arm of the beam and remove the shock absorber with the lower rubber cushion and the spacer bush, the lower support washer, the compression stroke buffer and the protective casing. Defective parts are replaced.

Before installing the shock absorber, we put all the parts onto its rod.

We introduce the upper end of the shock absorber into the opening of the body and start the bolt of the lower securing of the shock absorber.

We put onto the shock absorber rod the upper rubber cushion and the support washer, start and tighten the nut of the rod securing.

We finally tighten the bolt of the lower securing of the shock absorber in the position «vehicle on wheels».

Tightening torque of the lower bolt of the shock absorber securing – 105 Nm.

Tightening torque of the upper nut of the shock absorber securing – 30 Nm.

Removal of the spring

We place the vehicle on an inspection pit or a lift

We unscrew the bolt of the lower securing of the shock absorber, as described above

We jack up the rear part of the vehicle and fix it on a support.

We insert into the opening of the arm of the beam a section of pipe or a strong rod

We pull the section of pipe downwards, pressing the arm of the beam down, and withdraw the spring.

We remove the lower and upper spring pads.

The upper spring pad usually sticks to the body.

We make sure that there are no deformations and ruptures on the pads.

Before installing the spring, we install on it the upper pad so that the end of the upper coil of the spring rests against the step of the pad.

Then, so that the upper pad does not shift during the installation of the spring, we attach it to the spring with adhesive tape or insulating tape.

We install the lower spring pad onto the lug of the bracket of the arm so that the pin of the pad enters the opening of the bracket (shown on the removed beam).

We mount the spring so that the end of its lower coil rests against the step of the pad (shown on the removed pad)

Having moved the arm of the beam downwards, we put the upper end of the spring with the pad onto the lug of the bracket of the body

We carry out the further assembly in the reverse order.

Replacement of the silent block of the arm of the beam

We replace the silent block of the arm in the event of ruptures or detachment of the rubber of the joint.

We carry out the work on an inspection pit or a ramp. We loosen the tightening of the wheel securing bolts on the side of the silent block being removed.

We jack up the rear part of the vehicle and securely fix it on factory-made supports.

We remove the wheel.

We remove the shoes of the brake mechanism of the rear wheel (article – Replacement of the brake shoes of the rear wheels Renault Duster).

We bring the parking brake cable out of the eye of the bracket of the beam.

We show the replacement of the silent block on the right arm of the beam of the rear suspension.

We install an adjustable support under the right arm of the beam.

We disconnect the lower securing of the shock absorber from the arm of the beam.

We unscrew the nut of the bolt securing the arm to the bracket and three bolts securing the bracket to the body.

We lower the right part of the beam on the adjustable support, until the fuel tank stops hindering the exit of the bolt securing the arm.

When lowering the beam it is necessary to watch that the hoses of the brake mechanisms of the rear wheels are not strongly stretched.

Having withdrawn the bolt, we remove the bracket from the arm.

The silent block of the arm perceives most of the loads along the axis of the vehicle, therefore in cross-section the rubber mass of the silent block is asymmetrical.

Before pressing out the silent block, mark the orientation of its elements relative to the arm, so that the new silent block is pressed in in the same position.

It is best to press the silent block out of the arm with a special puller.

If there is no puller, one can facilitate the removal by sawing the outer cage of the silent block.

We insert the blade of a hacksaw for metal into the opening of the rubber mass of the silent block and saw through the plastic outer cage of the silent block.

This will allow the interference of the silent block in the opening of the arm to be considerably reduced.

After this, with a drift or a section of pipe of suitable diameter, we knock the silent block out of the arm from the side of the sill, applying the force to the outer cage.

Before pressing in the new silent block, we clean the opening in the arm.

We insert the silent block into the opening of the arm, orienting it according to the marks.

We press the silent block into the arm with a cup puller, applying the force through a drift to the outer bush of the silent block (for clarity, shown on the removed beam).

We carry out the replacement of the silent block of the left arm in a similar way, except for the operation of unscrewing the bolts securing the bracket of the arm to the body (having unscrewed the nut of the bolt securing the left arm to the bracket, we withdraw the bolt and bring the arm out of the eye of the bracket).

We carry out the installation of the arms of the beam of the rear suspension in the reverse order.

We finally tighten the nuts of the bolts securing the arms to the brackets to a torque of 125 Nm in the position «vehicle on wheels».

Removal of the beam of the rear suspension

We remove the beam for replacement in the event of its damage.

We carry out the work on an inspection pit or a ramp.

We remove the shoes of the brake mechanisms of the rear wheels (article – Replacement of the brake shoes of the rear wheels Renault Duster).

We bring the end pieces of the parking brake cables out of the holders on the arms of the beam of the rear suspension.

We disconnect the hoses of the brake mechanisms of the rear wheels from the brake pipes located on the beam.

We disconnect the wheel speed sensors from the brake shields.

We place an adjustable support under the beam

We disconnect the lower secuings of the shock absorbers from the arms of the beam and remove both springs of the rear suspension.

With an 18 mm ring spanner we unscrew the nut of the bolt securing the right arm of the beam to the bracket, holding the bolt with a spanner of the same size.

After unscrewing the nut of the bolt securing the right arm to the bracket, the bolt cannot be withdrawn, as it rests against the fuel tank

With a 16 mm socket with an extension we unscrew three bolts securing the bracket of the right arm to the body and bring out of the eye of the bracket the parking brake cable (shown by the arrow).

With the same tools we unscrew the nut of the bolt securing the left arm to the bracket

We withdraw the bolt from the opening of the bracket and the silent block or knock it out with a drift of soft metal.

We bring the left arm of the beam out of the eye of the bracket and lower the beam on the adjustable support, holding it on both sides.

We remove from the beam the bracket of the right arm, the shields of the brake mechanisms of the rear wheels, the brake pipes and the wheel axles.

We install the beam of the rear suspension in the reverse order.

We finally tighten the nuts of the bolts in the position «vehicle on wheels»

Tightening torques:

  • - nut securing the arm of the rear suspension to the body bracket – 125 Nm;
  • - bolt securing the bracket of the suspension arm to the body – 62 Nm;
  • - nut of the rear wheel hub bearing – 175 Nm;
  • - bolt securing the rear wheel axle to the flange of the beam of the rear suspension – 80 Nm;
  • - lower bolt of the shock absorber securing – 105 Nm.

Replacement of the rear wheel hub bearing

We carry out the replacement of the bearing in the event of its failure – noise, howling in the area of the rear wheel.

We fully lower the parking brake lever.

We remove the rear wheel and dismantle the brake drum

From the inner side of the drum, with circlip pliers, we remove the circlip of the bearing.

The bearing to be replaced is knocked out of the seat of the drum with the help of a suitable drift, having placed two wooden blocks under the brake drum.

Before installing the new bearing, we clean the mounting surface for it in the brake drum.

We place the brake drum on the wooden blocks with the other side and insert the bearing into the seat of the drum.

We press in the new bearing with a puller as far as it will go, applying the force through a drift to the outer ring of the bearing.

In this case, the outer ring of the old bearing can be used as a drift.

Tone ring of the rear wheel speed sensor

When pressing in the bearing, do not damage the tone ring of the rear wheel speed sensor, pressed onto the drum from its inner side.

We install the circlip into the groove of the drum.

We check the condition of the axle.

If its mounting surface for the bearing or the thread for the nut is damaged — we replace the axle

We mount the brake drum onto the axle.

With an E-16 socket we unscrew four screws securing the rear wheel axle to the flange of the beam of the rear suspension, remove the axle and install a new one.
