This article will cover replacing tie rod ends, replacing rods and tie rod boots.
Preparing the car for the job.
Put the car on a lift or inspection pit.
To complete the task, you will need the following tools: 15, 22, 24 mm wrenches, 6 mm Allen key, wheel nut wrench, ball joint puller.
Replacing the outer tie rod end
The left end has a right-hand thread, and the right end has a left-hand thread.
Install wheel chocks under the rear wheels.
Put the car on the parking brake.
Loosen the front wheel nuts.
Lift and install the front of the car on the support from the side of the work being performed.
Remove the wheel.
Loosen the tightening of the lock nut of the steering rod end
Unscrew the nut securing the hinge pin to the steering knuckle arm, holding the pin from cranking
We install a ball joint puller and press out the pin from the boss of the steering arm.
We remove the pin from the boss of the steering arm
We twist the tip from the steering rod, counting the number of turns
If you don't have a puller, you can knock out the ball joint pin by hitting the end of the pivot arm boss with a hammer, striking along the axis of the arm.
Install the new tip in the reverse order, screwing it onto the steering rod by the calculated number of turns.
Tightening torque of the lock nut is 50 Nm, the nut of the ball joint pin of the steering rod tip is 37 Nm.
If necessary, adjust the wheel alignment angles (article - Adjusting the front wheel alignment angles).
Replacing the protective cover of the steering traction
Remove the tie rod end as described above.
Unscrew the tie rod end lock nut from the tie rod
Use sliding pliers to squeeze the ears of the small clamp securing the cover and remove the clamp
Use side cutters to cut the large clamp of the boot, remove the clamp
Move the protective boot from the steering gear housing and remove it from the rod
Install the boot in the reverse order
Before installing the cover, apply silicone-containing grease to the steering rack teeth and the working surface of the tie rod joint.
Check and, if necessary, adjust the front wheel alignment angles.
Replacing the steering rod
Prepare the car as described at the beginning of the article.
Remove the tie rod end
Remove the protective cover from the tie rod
Having grasped the hinge housing with sliding pliers, unscrew the end of the tie rod from the steering rack
To make it easier to unscrew the hinge, turn the steering wheel to the right when removing the left tie rod, and to the left when removing the right tie rod.
Apply anaerobic thread locker to the threaded part of the inner hinge housing.
Install the rod in the reverse order. The tightening torque of the steering rod hinge to the rack is 80 Nm.
Before installing the cover, apply silicone-containing grease to the teeth steering rack and the working surface of the tie rod joint.
We check and adjust the installation angles of the front wheels of the car.
