This system ensures vehicle controllability in extreme conditions (obstacle avoidance, oversteer in corners, etc.).

The system allows better control of the vehicle during extreme driving and adapts it to the individual driving style.

However, this system does not replace the driver's skills. It does not extend the vehicle's capabilities and should not be used as a reason to drive at higher speeds.

Even with this system, the driver must remain cautious and attentive (ready for any unexpected events that may occur while driving).

System operating principle

The sensor on the steering wheel monitors the trajectory set by the driver.

Other sensors installed on the vehicle monitor the actual vehicle trajectory.

The system compares the driver's intended trajectory with the actual vehicle trajectory and, if necessary, corrects the latter by applying brakes to individual wheels and/or modifying engine torque.

If this lamp comes on when starting the engine and the message «ESP system deactivated» appears, gently turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to activate the system.

Cornering stability control

The system optimises ESP operation in the event of significant oversteer (loss of front wheel grip).

Faults:

If the system detects a malfunction, the message «ESP/ASR system faulty» appears on the instrument panel display and the «Service» and (A) warning lamps come on. Contact a Renault dealer.

Anti-slip system (ASR)

The anti-slip system reduces drive wheel spin and improves vehicle controllability when pulling away and during hard acceleration.

The system allows better control of the vehicle during extreme driving and adapts it to the individual driving style.

Operating principle

Using sensors mounted on the wheels, the system continuously measures and compares the rotation speed of the drive wheels and monitors for sudden changes.

If a wheel starts to spin, the system brakes the wheel, reducing wheel torque to a level that maintains tyre grip on the road.

The system also monitors engine speed, maintaining it at a level that ensures wheel grip, regardless of accelerator pedal position.

When the system is activated, the warning lamp begins to flash.

System deactivation

In some cases (driving on very soft ground, snow, mud, or when snow chains are fitted), the system may reduce engine power to limit wheel spin.

If the system is not required, it can be deactivated by pressing button (1) (see Fig. 2).

When deactivated, the message «ASR system deactivated» flashes and the «Service» warning lamps illuminate (see Fig. 1).

Deactivating the ASR system also deactivates the ESP system.

As soon as possible, reactivate the system by pressing button (1) again.

The system is automatically activated when the ignition is switched on or when the vehicle speed exceeds 50 km/h.

At speeds above 50 km/h, it is impossible to deactivate this system.

Faults:

If the system detects a fault, the message «ESP/ASR system faulty» appears on the instrument panel and the warning lamps come on.
