General information

We replace the chain and the gear of the oil pump drive as a result of wear. We also remove the chain and the drive sprocket during a major engine overhaul.

Necessary tools and materials

  • 13 mm, 16 mm, 18 mm, 10 mm sockets;
  • TORX E14;
  • four-sided key;
  • flat-blade screwdriver;
  • TDC setting retainer;
  • camshaft retainer;
  • engine oil;
  • container for draining the oil.

Conditions of execution: we carry out the work on a lift or over an inspection pit.

Preparatory operations

Preliminary work:

Removing the oil pump drive

Crankshaft gear
We remove the crankshaft gear
Unscrewing the front cover bolts
We unscrew the bolts securing the crankshaft front cover
Prising up the front cover
We prise up the crankshaft front cover with a screwdriver
Removing the front cover
We remove the crankshaft front cover
Removing the chain and sprocket
We remove the chain. We withdraw the oil pump drive sprocket
Chain and sprocket removed
The oil pump drive chain and sprocket are removed

Refitting: we refit the parts in the reverse sequence.

Preparation before refitting

Cleaning the block mating surface
Before refitting the crankshaft front cover we clean the mating surface of the cylinder block

Preparing the cover:

  • We clean the cover of remnants of the old sealant.
  • We replace the oil seal.
  • We apply sealant to the mating surface of the cover and refit the cover.
Applying sealant to the cover
We apply sealant to the mating surface of the cover

Important! When refitting make sure that the chain is correctly tensioned and the sprockets are aligned. Use the TDC and camshaft retainers to ensure the correct position of the crankshaft and camshafts.

Recommendation: after refitting the oil pump drive pour in fresh engine oil, start the engine and check the oil pressure. Make sure there are no leaks or extraneous noises in the area of the drive.
