Renault Megane II oil pump repair

General information

We remove the oil pump during a major engine overhaul, when replacing the chain and when repairing the pump itself.

Removing the oil pump

Necessary tools

10 mm, 13 mm sockets;
TORX E8;
four-sided key;
engine oil;
container for draining the oil.

Preliminary operations:

We drain the oil from the engine sump (see the article Replacing the engine oil and filter on a Renault Megane 2).
We remove the oil sump (see the article Removing and refitting the sump on a Renault Megane 2).

Unscrewing the pump securing bolts — We unscrew two bolts securing the oil pump

Important! The oil pump securing bolts are of different sizes. Remember their location.

Lowering the oil pump — We lower the oil pump slightly

Removing the chain from the pump sprocket — We remove the chain from the pump sprocket

Tightening torque: after refitting the pump we tighten the bolts to a torque of 25 N·m.

Repairing the oil pump

Additional tools

special sealant;
8 mm spanner;
pliers;
ruler;
set of flat feeler gauges.

Dismantling the pump

Unscrewing the pump cover bolts — We unscrew five bolts securing the oil pump cover

Removing the oil pump cover — We remove the oil pump cover

Removing the relief valve:

We withdraw the spring retainer of the relief valve.
The relief valve spring is installed with preload.
The retainer must be withdrawn very carefully, holding the spring abutment.

Withdrawing the plunger — We withdraw the relief valve plunger

Checking the clearances

Measuring the radial clearance — We measure the radial clearance between the gears and the pump body

Radial clearance: must be 0.11–0.249 mm.

Measuring the axial clearance — We measure the axial clearance of the gears

Axial clearance: must be 0.020–0.086 mm.

Important! If the clearances do not correspond to the standard values, we replace the pump as an assembly.

Inspection and checking of the parts

Washing: we wash all the parts of the pump.

Inspecting the pump body — We inspect the pump body and cover

Body and cover: in the presence of cracks or deep scratches we replace the pump.

Relief valve plunger: we check for scratches and traces of jamming. Small dents and burrs can be removed by grinding.

Relief valve spring: we check for residual deformation and bending. We replace a damaged spring.

Inspecting the pump gears — We check the pump gears

Pump gears: we check for metal pitting, scoring and tooth wear. We replace damaged parts.

Assembly and refitting

Assembly: we assemble the pump and refit it in the reverse order.

Important! When refitting the pump use new sealant for sealing the connections.

Recommendation: after refitting the oil pump pour in fresh engine oil, start the engine and check the oil pressure. Make sure there are no leaks.
