Preparing the car for the task
Remove the front wheel from the side of the work being done
We reduce the brake pads
We unscrew the three screws securing the brake drum and remove it
If the drum is difficult to remove, knock the drum off the hub with hammer blows through a wooden block
Use a screwdriver to pry and remove the coupling springs
It is convenient to use special tongs to remove the springs
On the inside of the brake shield, hold the head of the brake shoe rod
With the other hand, press the cup, compressing the spring. Rotate the spring cup 90°
This will align the notch on the cup with the tip of the pad support pin
Remove cups with spring
Remove the rod from the hole in the brake shield
Also remove the rod of another block
We unscrew the 19 nut of the support pin of the block with a wrench
We take out the support pin together with the washer and the bronze bushing
Removing the block
Remove the second block in the same way
We install new pads on the fingers (with washers and bushings) and fix the fingers on the brake shield by tightening their nuts
In this case, the marks on the ends of the fingers should be directed towards the tees of the brake cylinders
We install rods with springs and cups on the pads
Installing the return springs
Turning the eccentric bolts with the “17” key, we bring the pads together
Install the brake drum on the hub and adjust the gap between the shoe and the drum
Gap adjustment when installing new brake pads
We loosen the nuts of the supporting fingers and press the brake pedal with a force of 12–16 kgf
By turning the support fingers, we bring the ends of the pads all the way into the drum. Keeping the fingers from turning, tighten their nuts.
We turn the bolts of the adjusting eccentrics until they stop against the brake pads. At the same time, we turn the eccentric bolts in the direction of rotation of the wheel.
Release the brake pedal and, slowly turning the nuts of the adjusting eccentrics in the opposite direction, release the eccentrics until the wheel starts to rotate freely.
After installing new pads, while the friction linings have not run in, the brake drums may heat up.
If the heating is low (the hand endures), additional adjustment is not required.
When the heat is strong, we slightly reduce the brake pads of the wheel with eccentrics
During the first 100 km, while the new pads have not run in, be careful, as the braking distance of the car may increase
Brake pad adjustment during operation
Hanging out the wheel
We rotate the wheel forward and turn the eccentric bolt of one of the blocks with the key “17” in the direction of rotation of the wheel until it slows down.
After that, slowly release the eccentric until the wheel starts to rotate freely, without the block touching the drum
Similarly, we adjust the clearance of the second block.
When adjusting the brake pads during operation, do not turn the support pins of the pads
Checking the heating of the brake drums, the efficiency and uniformity of braking when the car is moving
