We remove the steering wheel for its replacement, as well as when removing the steering column switches, the steering column or the instrument panel.
We carry out the work on a level surface.
We disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
We set the front wheels of the car to the straight-ahead position.
We remove the driver's airbag.
The airbag is secured to the steering wheel by two plastic hooks that engage with two spring retainers on the steering wheel (shown with the airbag removed).
To remove the airbag, from the rear side of the steering wheel we insert two screwdrivers into the openings in the steering wheel.
We press with the screwdrivers on the two spring retainers (shown with the airbag removed) and, pulling the airbag towards us, disengage the airbag hooks from the retainers.
We move the airbag away from the steering wheel.
We raise the wire connector retainer.
We disconnect the connector from the airbag socket.
We remove the airbag.
The removed airbag should be stored in a place protected from moisture and excessive heating, placed with its trim facing upwards.
With a Torx T-50 key we unscrew the steering wheel securing screw by a few turns.
We do not unscrew the screw completely, so as not to be injured when removing the steering wheel.
Rocking it, we pull the steering wheel towards us and remove it from the shaft splines.
We unscrew the steering wheel securing screw completely.
After unscrewing the steering wheel securing screw it is desirable to mark the position of the steering wheel relative to the steering column shaft, for example with a marker. This will facilitate installation.
Carefully we pass the driver's airbag wiring harness through the opening in the steering wheel.
We remove the steering wheel from the shaft.
We install the steering wheel in the reverse order.
In doing so, the slot on the steering wheel must align with the protrusion on the splined end piece of the steering column shaft.
