We remove and repair the wheel drives in case of damage or to replace the hinges and their covers
We also remove the drives if necessary to gain access to other units.
To complete the task, you will need a wrench and socket head for 18, socket heads for 13, 30, a wrench for wheel bolts, a mounting spatula, a hammer bit.
Removing the front wheel drives of a 4x4 car
We prepare the car and install it on a lift or an inspection ditch.
Unscrew the wheel bolts from the side to be performed and remove the wheel.
Use a hammer handle to push out the decorative plug of the wheel disc
Remove the decorative plug
Put the wheel in place and fasten it with two opposite bolts.
We lower the car on the wheels and turn on the parking brake.
With a head of 30, we loosen the wheel bearing nut, while the assistant must press the brake pedal.
After that, hang out and remove the wheel.
Having inserted a screwdriver into the hole of the brake disc and, resting it on the brake pad guide, finally unscrew the wheel bearing nut.
The nut will need to be replaced after repair. Usually a nut is sold with a CV joint.
If there is no nut, you can temporarily use the old nut, but before installing it, crimp the petals of the collar of the nut in a vise.
Remove the wheel and place the front of the car on a stand.
We take out the rubber couplings of the wires of the speed sensor and the brake hose from the bracket
Disconnect the stabilizer link from the shock strut bracket
We unscrew the nuts of the bolts securing the front suspension arm to the subframe and remove the bolts
It is possible (instead of detaching the arm from the subframe) to detach the ball joint pin from the steering knuckle
We move the steering knuckle with the shock absorber to the side and remove the splined shank of the outer hinge housing from the wheel hub.
In this case, it is necessary to keep the wheel drive shaft from axial movement so that the three-stud does not come out of the inner joint housing.
Leaning with a mounting spatula on the gearbox housing,
Pull the inner joint housing out of the gearbox
Remove the drive of the left front wheel
There is no retaining ring in the connection of the splines of the hub part of the right wheel internal drive housing and the through shaft of the transfer case, while the spline connection has a tight fit.
When removing the right wheel drive, we rest the mounting blade on the tube put on the bolt head, and, applying the necessary force, we shift the body of the internal hinge from the splines of the transfer case through shaft.
Remove the right wheel drive.
Install the drives in reverse order.
When installing the right front wheel drive, the splines of the transfer case through shaft should be lubricated with grease.
The sealing ring on the transfer case drive shaft should be replaced if it is damaged.
Removing the front wheel drives of a 4x2 car
The operations for removing the left wheel drive are the same as on a 4x4 car.
Basic operations for removing the right wheel drive are the same as on a 4x4 car.
The difference lies in the fact that before removing the right wheel drive, we unscrew the bolt securing the cover of the intermediate support and turn it on the axis, releasing the bearing.
Install the front wheel drives in reverse order.
Removing the outer hinge and replacing the cover
Remove the front wheel drive as described above.
We clean the hinge body and cover from dirt and put the drive on the workbench.
Having placed the blade of a flat screwdriver at the junction of the lock of a large clamp, we strike with a hammer on the handle of the screwdriver
Opening the lock of the clamp, remove the clamp
Having placed the blade of a flat screwdriver at the junction of the lock of the small clamp, we strike with a hammer on the handle of the screwdriver
Remove the collar
Remove the boot from the outer hinge body and slide the boot along the shaft towards the inner hinge
We clamp the shaft in a vise and with a soft metal drift we knock the outer hinge off the splines of the drive shaft, striking the end of the cage
Remove the outer joint from the shaft
Remove the rubber boot from the shaft
Pry off the retaining ring with a screwdriver
Remove the retaining ring from the groove on the shaft
If the hinge is removed only to replace the boot (when it is known that it has recently been damaged and the CV joint has retained its performance), then, without disassembling the hinge, we remove the old grease from the hinge and wash it in kerosene.
Blow out the hinge with compressed air.
Inspecting the balls, the separator, the cage and the internal cavity of the body.
Scoring, dents, cracks, traces of corrosion on the hinge elements are not allowed - such a hinge is replaceable.
We clean the shaft of the old grease and apply a thin layer of new grease to it.
We put a new hinge cover on the shaft.
We install a new retaining ring in the groove of the shaft.
We put in and evenly distribute the required amount of new grease in the cavities of the hinge body and its cover.
We put the hinge on the shaft and, striking with a hammer through a soft metal spacer on the splined shank of the hinge, press the hinge onto the shaft.
Check the fixation of the hinge cage with the retaining ring.
Checking the mobility of the hinge - it should move without jamming.
We pull the cover onto the hinge body so that the belts of the cover for the clamps are located in the corresponding places of the shaft and the hinge body.
We fix the hinge cover with new clamps.
The design of the factory clamps during the installation of the CV joint does not allow them to be installed in a non-specialized car service, since this requires special equipment.
In this case, for example, you can use commercially available universal tape clamps for attaching CV joint covers.
We install the clamp in the groove of the cover, pull the tape with pliers, squeezing the clamp.
Tightly pulling the clamp, bend the elongated end in the opposite direction.
Check the tightness of the clamp and install the front wheel drive in reverse order.
Removing the inner hinge and replacing the cover
We replace the cover of the inner hinge of the front wheel drive if the cover is damaged.
The inner joints of the left and right wheel drives differ only in the body.
All major work is shown on the left wheel drive inner joint.
Remove the front wheel drive as described above.
We clean the hinge body and cover from dirt and put the drive on the workbench.
We place the blade of the screwdriver at the junction of the lock of the large clamp, strike with a hammer on the handle of the screwdriver
Opening the lock of the clamp, remove the clamp
Use a screwdriver to open the lock of the small clamp
Remove the small collar
Remove the cover from the inner hinge body and remove the hinge body
Using two screwdrivers, open the retaining ring
Remove the retaining ring from the groove on the shaft
Clamp the drive shaft in a vise.
Using a soft metal drift, knock the three-stud off the splines of the shaft
Remove the three-stud from the shaft
When assembling the hinge, the three-stud must be installed on the shaft so that the groove on the three-stud (shown by the arrow) is directed towards the cover.
Remove the cover from the shaft
Pry off with a screwdriver the retaining ring mounted on the shank of the left wheel drive pivot housing
Remove it
Remove the spring from the housing along with the thrust washer
If the spring is broken or has lost its elasticity, replace it with a new one.
We remove the old grease from the hinge body and wash it in kerosene.
We wipe the hinge with a rag and blow it with compressed air.
We inspect the bearings of the three-stud bearing and the inner cavity of the hinge housing.
Scoring, dents, cracks, traces of corrosion on the hinge elements are not allowed - such a hinge is replaceable.
Before installing a new hinge boot, apply a small amount of grease to the end of the shaft.
Having put the cover on the shaft, we place its belt under the small clamp in the groove of the shaft.
We put half of the recommended amount of the required lubricant and evenly distribute it in the cavity of the hinge body, the other half - in the cavity of the boot.
We install a new retaining ring in the groove of the shank of the left wheel drive hinge housing.
We put the hinge body on the three-stud and pull the cover onto the hinge body, placing the belt of the cover under the large collar in the mounting groove of the body.
We fix the hinge cover with new clamps.
Install the front wheel drive in reverse order.
