In the article, we will consider checking the brake mechanisms of a car
Checking brake disc and pad wear
If, when braking, the car pulls to the side or extraneous noise is heard, you need to check the condition of the pads
We prepare the car and install it on a viewing ditch or lift
Remove the front wheel
Check the condition of the pads through the hole in the brake caliper body
If the thickness of the friction linings is less than the allowable value, replace the brake pads
Dimensions of brake pads and discs, mm
Front wheel brake disc diameter - 299.0
Rear wheel brake disc diameter - 280.0
Nominal front wheel brake disc thickness - 25.0
Nominal rear wheel brake disc thickness - 10.0
The minimum allowable thickness of the front wheel brake disc when worn is 23.8
The minimum allowable thickness of the brake disc of the rear wheel when worn is 8.0
The maximum runout of the front and rear wheels is 0.1
The minimum allowable thickness of the friction lining of the front wheel brake pad when worn is 2.0
The minimum allowable thickness of the friction lining of the rear wheel brake pad when worn is 1.5
We measure the thickness of the brake disc at eight points evenly spaced around the circumference (through 45º), approximately 15 mm from the outer edge of the disc
If its thickness is less than allowed, replace the brake disc
In the same way, we check the degree of wear of the brake pads and the brake disc of the rear wheel
Checking the parking brake
The parking brake (handbrake) should hold the car on a slope of 25% when moving the lever in the car interior by 3-6 clicks (teeth) of the ratchet
To check the correct adjustment of the parking brake, we find a flyover with a height of H = 1.25 m with an entrance length of L = 5 m.
This ratio corresponds to a slope of 25%
If there is no such ramp, then for a simplified check of the parking brake, we install the car on a flat area
Set the gearshift lever to the neutral position, fully raise the parking brake lever in the cabin
We get out of the car and try to move the car. If you succeeded, you need to adjust the parking brake actuator
