We remove the coolant pump and thermostat when repairing the engine and for replacement
Replacing the coolant pump
The pump is replaced when noise occurs, the level of which exceeds the usual level and when coolant leaks from the seal of the water pump
Preparing the car for work
Draining the coolant from the engine cooling system
We remove the accessory drive belt, as indicated in the article "How to check and replace the Mazda 6 accessory drive belt"
We unscrew the three bolts securing the water pump pulley and remove the pulley
Unscrew the water pump mounting bolts and remove the pump
Remove the gasket installed between the water pump housing and the engine block
Install the pump in the reverse order, replacing the gasket, lubricating it on both sides with a thin layer of sealant
Installing a new accessory drive belt
Fill coolant
Removing and installing thermostat
The thermostat is replaced when the engine temperature is unstable - overheating or insufficient heating
To check the thermostat on the car, start a cold engine and touch the radiator inlet hose with your hand - it should be cold
After the coolant temperature reaches 80-84º C, the hose should heat up quickly, indicating the start of fluid circulation through the large circuit.
If this does not happen, remove the thermostat and check its performance
Remove the decorative engine cover
Drain the fluid from the cooling system
Loosen the clamp of the radiator inlet hose, squeezing its bent ears with pliers, and slide the clamp along the hose
Remove the hose from the thermostat nozzle
In the same way, remove the liquid circulation hose from the thermostat fitting in a small circle
We unscrew the three bolts securing the thermostat housing to the cylinder block and remove the thermostat assembly with the housing
Remove the rubber seal from the thermostat housing
Pry off with a screwdriver and remove the thermostat from its housing
Remove the O-ring from the thermostat
To check the thermostat, lower the thermostat into a container of water heated to 78-79º C
Gradually heating the water, we monitor the temperature at which the thermostat valve starts to open
The thermostat is healthy under the following conditions:
- - valve opening start temperature 80-84º С;
- - valve full opening temperature 97º С
- - valve stroke at full opening 8.0 mm
Install the thermostat and all removed parts in reverse order
Fill in coolant and remove air pockets from the system
