Remove the steering gear for replacement or repair

We install the car on a lift or a viewing ditch

Removing the steering mechanism: 1 - high pressure pipeline; 2 - bolts of fastening of the steering mechanism; 3 - sealing ring; 4 - steering mechanism; 5 - low pressure pipeline; 6 - front suspension subframe

Open the hood and remove the air path resonator (article - Replacing the Nissan Almera air filter)

With a 10-head, we unscrew the bolt of the upper fastening of the heat shield of the steering rack to the bracket of the power steering tube

We pump out the power steering fluid from the power steering reservoir using a syringe or pear

Disconnect the ends of both tie rods from the steering knuckles (article - Replacing the rod and outer tie rod end Nissan Almera)

In the passenger compartment, disconnect the universal joint coupling of the intermediate shaft of the steering column from the drive gear of the steering mechanism (article - Removing the steering column of a Nissan Almera car)

From the bottom of the car, disconnect the wiring harness of the diagnostic oxygen concentration sensor from the plastic holder of the rail heat shield

Remove the heat shield of the rail (A is the plastic holder for the oxygen concentration sensor wire harness).

Before disconnecting the hydraulic lines from the crankcase of the steering mechanism, we substitute a wide container under the crankcase to collect the escaping fluid.

From the bottom of the car, with a 13 wrench, unscrew the nut 3 fastening the drain pipe bracket, with a 19 wrench - fitting 2 of the drain pipe and with a 17 wrench - fitting 1 of the discharge pipe.

We remove the tips of the tubes of both lines from the holes of the crankcase of the steering mechanism and insert plugs of a suitable size into the holes of the tubes and the crankcase

On the left side, with a head of 18, we unscrew the bolt securing the steering mechanism to the subframe

We also unscrew the bolt securing the steering gear to the subframe on the right side.

Remove the rear support of the power unit (article - Replacing the supports of the power plant K4M Nissan Almera)

We press the power unit forward (along the vehicle)

Remove the steering gear to the left

Install the steering gear in reverse order

Before installation, we check that the rail is set to the middle position.

To do this, use sliding pliers to turn the steering gear by the flat in any direction until it stops and then turn the gear in the other direction by 1.5 turns.

Reuse of the bolt and nut that secures the steering column intermediate shaft pivot yoke to the steering gear shaft is not permitted. The bolt and nut must be replaced.

The front suspension subframe bolts must not be reused. Bolts must be replaced.

O-rings on pipe fittings must be replaced before installing piping.

Install the steering gear on the front suspension subframe and secure with bolts. Bolt tightening torque 105 Nm (10.5 kgf.m).

Remove the process plugs from the steering gear holes and high and low pressure pipes.

Install a new O-ring and connect the high pressure pipe fitting to the steering box. The tightening torque of the fitting is 21 Nm (2.1 kgf.m).

Install a new O-ring and connect the low pressure pipe fitting to the steering gear. Tightening torque of the fitting 21 Nm.

Remove the clamps from the low and high pressure pipes of the power steering system.

Reinstall the heat shield of the steering gear and secure with bolts. Bolt tightening torque 21 Nm (2.1 kgf.m).

Fill the working fluid into the power steering reservoir and remove the air (bleeding is described in the article - Removing the power steering pump of a Nissan Almera car).
