In the article, we will consider the adjustment and repair work of the mechanism and drive of the car handbrake
The parking brake is adjustable if the lever travel has become more than half of its maximum travel (7-8 clicks), or the car is not held on a slope
Hanging the rear wheel of the car
We turn on the neutral gear in the transfer case and turn off the front axle
Move the parking brake lever to the frontmost position

We tighten the adjusting screw with a key until the handbrake brake drum stops turning by hand

We unscrew the adjusting screw by 5-6 clicks (1/3-1/2 turn of the screw) so that the drum rotates freely

We adjust the thrust of the drive, for this we unscrew the lock nut of the adjusting fork with a key 13

Unpin with pliers and remove the pin connecting the plug and the expander drive lever

Turning the adjusting fork, we combine the hole in the fork and the lever, install the pin, cotter it and tighten the locknut
Checking the correct adjustment of the parking brake
A vehicle on a 23% slope should be held by the parking brake when the lever is retracted 4-5 clicks
Replacing handbrake pads
We install the car on a viewing ditch or lift
We remove the rear driveshaft, as indicated in the article "How to remove the cardan drive of a UAZ-3151, -31512, -31514, -31519"
We unscrew the screw of the adjusting device, we bring the pads together, as indicated above

Remove the brake drum
On the inside, hold the brake shoe rod

Press on the cup, compressing the spring
Turn the spring cup 90°. In this case, the slot on the cup will be aligned with the protrusions of the rod

Remove the cup with the spring and take out the pad rods

With a large screwdriver, we squeeze the lower edge of the block and remove it from the groove of the piston of the adjusting mechanism

Pull back the upper edge of the block with your hand and remove the block from the groove of the expander piston

Disconnect the coupling springs from the shoe and remove the shoe
We also remove another block
Install the pads in reverse order
Before installing the drum, disconnect the adjusting fork from the expander drive lever
